Wichita, KS

Welcome to our first Hunt Report from Brewzle! This week TJ checked out Wichita, Kansas with Chad and Taitum from our club and if you thought Ohio was the land of Weller, think differently, because Kansas is truly the real land of Weller.

Our commenters have some theories, turns out 1/5 of the wheat grown in the US comes from Kansas. Maybe Buffalo Trace is just giving the good wheaters back to the farmers that made it? If you know for certain why Kansas has so much Weller, let us know!

If you haven’t checked out our video yet it is live on YouTube, you can also get an uncut version over on our Patreon!

I Went Bourbon Hunting in the TRUE Land of Weller | Wichita, KS

Brewzle Hunt Report – Wichita, KS

Warning: Spoilers Ahead!

Stop 1: Total Wine

Once again we were asked to not film inside a Total Wine store. That’s okay, their store their rules. However most of the shelves were filled with their house brands, and since their allocations go to their reward members, probably safe to say you won’t find much here, even if it was a brand new store.

Stop 2: JT’s Liquors

Walking in we found a Woodford Reserve Batch Proof sitting on the back counter, good sign right? Well it gets better as it became clear the theme for today was going to be cheap access to all the Weller Special Reserve you can dream of. Sitting on the shelf was a 750ml for $26, and 1.75L for $40. Also, if TJ didn’t already have six back at home, $45 for a Blue Note Juke Joint Uncut Unfiltered Store Pick would have been a steal.

Oh and just out of the blue, without asking or even persuading, a Weller 107 appeared from the backroom. So it’s safe to say if you live in the area and build a relationship at JT’s, they’ll take care of you.

TJ’s Buys

  • Weller Special Reserve (1.75L) – $40
  • Weller Antique 107 – $65

    Store Total: $105

    Hunt Total: $105

    Stop 3: Jacob Liquor

Once again we’ll be welcomed to ample Weller Special Reserve, but just a tad more expensive at $29. However, Jacob has a wide arrange of store picks from Knob Creek, Jack Daniels, Old Forester, and Barrell (the orange one TJ loves). What TJ did find was Savage & Cooke Howling Mob Bourbon. He enjoyed their bloody butcher corn in the past, so that’s going to be a pick up for sure.

After bonding with the owner over some samples, yet again another Weller 107 appeared at the checkout counter for TJ to purchase. So again, building a relationship at this store could bear some fruit in the long term.

    TJ’s Buys

    • Savage & Cooke Howling Mob Bourbon – $100
    • Weller Antique 107 – $75

    Store Total: $175

    Hunt Total: $280

Stop 4: Central Market Wine & Spirits

Walking in, TJ found a Knob Creek 18 sitting at the counter, no price tag so who knows what rules there were to buy that. The find of the store was a Wood Hat All American Red White and Blue Corn Whiskey, which we have a few barrel picks from the brand in the pipeline for our club folks to enjoy.

And yes, once again Weller Special Reserve was in an abundance, $26 for the 750ml.

    TJ’s Buy

    • Wood Hat All American Red White and Blue Corn Whiskey – $48

    Store Total: $48

    Hunt Total: $328

    Stop 5: Burgadt Liquor

TJ found the glass case with Weller 107, Blanton’s, Eagle Rare, and a 2023 Maker’s Mark Wood Finishing, show casing what was available in their July drawing. Now this is for members only so if you’re local, you’ll need to shop here often to gain entries to win these bottles.

In the back glass case (yeah this place has two) you’ll find items like Knob Creek 12, Joseph Magnus Cigar Blend, and some rarer WhistlePigs, for all pretty close to MSRP. This store also collaborates with a local brewery to age beer in their store pick barrels. That same barrel is now back at Keeper’s Heart aging whiskey in it.

    TJ’s Buys

    • Nortons / Burgardt Fishin’ In Bed – $10
    • Wood Hat Bloody Butcher – $95

    Store Total: $105

    Hunt Total: $433

    Stop 6: Tom’s Wine & Spirits

Chad’s local spot, Tom’s is the place to go for barrel picks. For the fifth time in a row, Weller Special Reserve was for sell at a few dollars off from MSRP, so I think that locks in Kansas’s new title as the new “Land of Weller.”

I think it’s safe to say, if you want to see the largest selection of whiskey available, you’re gonna have to stop by Tom’s. Between being able to taste through the current picks or stare at their literal wall of whiskey, you’ll find something.

    TJ’s Buy

    • Old Soul Store Pick – $75

    Store Total: $75

    Hunt Total: $508

    In Summary…

So obviously if you’re looking for Weller Special Reserve, you’re going to want to make a detour through Kansas. While many places can claim they get Weller or other Buffalo Trace products often, I don’t think anyplace can claim it as a shelf staple like Kansas.

Where to next? Well in real life TJ and Seth will be hitting up the Kentucky Bourbon Festival but in video world, TJ will be in Tulsa, Oklahoma! That video is already available, uncut, for our club members.
